How to play Bluff
- The player who starts a round plays 1–4 cards face down and names a rank (e.g. "three 7s"). Everyone plays that rank until the round ends.
- On your turn, play 1–4 cards claiming they are that rank (you may lie) or pass.
- After each play, until the next card is played, anyone can call "BLUFF!". If the play was a lie, the player who made it takes the pile and the caller starts the next round; if it was true, the caller takes the pile and the revealed player starts the next round.
- If everyone passes after the last play, the pile is burned (removed from the game) and the last player to play starts the next round.
- The first player to empty their hand wins. If your final play is caught, you take the pile and the game goes on.
Tips that win games
- Count cards: one deck has 4 of each rank. If you hold three 7s, someone claiming "two 7s" is almost certainly lying.
- Calling on a big pile is expensive: if you're wrong you take the whole pile. On a small pile, being wrong costs little.
- Watch the player dropping their last cards: if that play stands, the game is over.
- Slipping one false card in among true ones draws less attention than an outright lie.
- The table remembers who gets caught: a player who lies all the time gets called more often.
How do the bots play?
Bots only use information a real player could know: their own hand, revealed cards, who picked up the pile, burned cards and how honest each player has turned out to be. From that they estimate how likely a play is to be a lie, call more carefully as the pile grows, and only lie when the lie is believable. Easy bots are careless and forgetful; Hard bots do the most precise maths.
Play BluffFrequently asked
How many players can play Bluff?
From 2 to 8, and 8-player rooms are free for everyone. At busy tables, choosing 2 decks (104 cards) makes for a more balanced game. Bots can fill empty seats.
What happens if my lie is caught?
You take every card in the pile and the player who called you starts the next round.
What if I call "BLUFF!" and I'm wrong?
If the play was true, you (the caller) take the pile and the revealed player starts the next round.
When is the pile burned?
If everyone at the table passes after the last play, the pile is burned and removed from the game. The last player to play starts the next round.
Can I play Bluff alone against bots?
Yes. Pick Bluff on the home page and press "Play now" to start right away against Easy, Normal or Hard bots.
Is Bluff free?
Yes. You can play free as a guest without an account. Decks, stamps and table looks in the shop are cosmetic only.
Does Bluff have other names?
The same kind of game is known in English as Cheat, Bullshit or I Doubt It. Mezar Café's Bluff is an online version of that classic with its own rules.
